The Audition by Janet Paone. I can say with confidence that there are some things I do really well... I can also say with confidence that auditioning...is NOT one of them.. like the time I walked into a closet at the Chan auditions...I knew I was in a closet.. I meant to leave the stage..and did..right into a closet..I heard the director say.. Janet youre in a closet... I said... yes, I know... or at CTC when I went up to the table to shake hands with the directors... then I started my monologue... still at the table..2 inches from their faces...then I tried walking backwards while speaking...or the time I sang in a room and ran around gathering up imaginary props...dont ask...or at New york City Opera auditions when my shoe fell into the orchestra pit and the conductor said well this is rather unorthodox or at the Guthrie when I ran into the stage management window...oh yes and the time in college when I was so nervous I drank before the Ah Wilderness audition and held the script upside down... I kept saying Yes MUM in a weird irish accent.. I share these examples because todays Park Square audition was no different...I was nervous about the steps.. Helen Keller auditions..I made it up these tippy rickety steps to the stage, then I didnt know where to go..I stood off to the side and said is this where you want me... they said, go into the light my dear..doesnt someone tell you that when youre dying...well, I was.. then I said does someone tell me to start..they said why dont you tell us what youre doing first... oops acting 101 I forgot that part... in the end I came, I spoke, then I stumbled down the stairs and proceeded to make mention of the fact that gee I hadnt even been drinking .edy about intoxication always works well in a room full of people you dont know... not. Next on the docket, the Ordway and Mn Opera... Ill keep you posed!!
