The August Grotto trip will be to Cave River Valley in Indiana. We will visit Endless Cave and River Cave. This is a special trip because the caves on this wonderful property have been closed for about 5 years due to WNS concerns. The caves are open this year from May 1 – August 31 and access is granted under a strict permit system, so this may be the last chance to visit until next year. Cave description: Endless cave is surveyed at 6903 feet. Much of it is large walking passage through a shallow stream. There are several leads with crawling passage to push and there is a formation room also. This cave is home to a very large bat hibernaculum during most of the year. I would rate this as an easy trip but it could be more difficult if want to push leads and do some crawling. River Cave is surveyed at 3853 feet. This is an optional cave trip for those who still have the energy and motivation to explore. The first few hundred feet of River Cave is deep water. A floatation device is needed to get through this part of the cave. After the deep water the stream passage consists of intermittent shallow pools. Most of the passage is walking with high ceilings and some areas with breakdown to navigate. *** If you are interested in attending, please send me a private email at tim.stops@gmail. We can only have 15 people in the group and everybody has to sign a permit form, so I need to know exactly who is attending. If you have any questions, feel free to email me or reply here to this post.
