The Australian Greens passed a resolution on Sri Lanka at our National Conference over the weekend :- That National Conference:- 1. Calls on Prime Minister Tony Abbott to raise with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse while in Colombo for CHOGM Australias concerns about human rights abuses in Sri Lanka, and to support an independent international investigation into war crimes and crimes against humanity in that country. 2. Notes that the Sri Lankan security forces have moved to stifle dissent in the lead up and during CHOGM by detaining protesters and restricting journalists reporting on abuses of Tamils, unionists, media workers, and many other members of civil society. 3. Thanks Senator Lee Rhiannon and New Zealand MP Jan Logie for their recent fact finding trip to Sri Lanka, and notes that the decision of the Sri Lankan government authorities to detain these two MPs is another attempt to restrict exposure of human rights abuses. 4. Calls on the Coalition government to immediately explain the extent of Australia’s complicity and cooperation with the Sri Lankan authorities over the case of a Sri Lankan naval officer, who was arrested for people smuggling and was once an adviser to the Australian government on how to stop asylum seekers leaving Sri Lanka.
