The AyandamaShenge Buthelezi chronicles: chapter three (the final chapter). Dear Ayanda, Its become blatantly apparent that you have no intention of replying to me. Ive reached out to you on several occasions and Ive been met with excuses at each turn. Its now been more than 6 weeks since I first challenged you to defend your vote. At first, you were chirpy and confident, but as the task beckoned, you began to shy away, and now, were at the point where youre flat-out ignoring me. Heres the thing though, your behaviour has mirrored our current government and ruling party so perfectly. I can now imagine what its like to be waiting for an RDP house only to be told next week, its coming, Im busy, I dont have time, et al. No reason is ever given, simply just an excuse, conveyed in the most dismissive and nonchalant of tones. You are quite aware that this debate has garnered some serious attention. You had an opportunity to partake in something constructive, but you have shunned it for no good reason whatsoever. I tried to think about how youd justify your vote, and the only real reasons I could think of were as follows: 1) The ANC is responsible for the liberation of the black majority and because of this you owe them your immovable and steadfast loyalty. 2) You truly believe that ANCs policies are the best out there, and they have implemented these policies to the best of their ability. 3) You believe that the ANC is the best of a bad bunch, and you are voting for the party, not the individual. 4) Your vote is bought. Whatever your reasons, you clearly werent confident enough to put pen to paper and defend yourself. Im not going to go into detail in an attempt to substantiate the conjecture above, Im simply going to challenge you further. Every X marked next to Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zumas name is a vote for corruption, a vote for self-enrichment, a vote for regression. You cannot love the party and hate the individual, as the individual is the person chosen to represent everything that party stands for. Jacob Zuma has and always will be shrouded in controversy. He has placed his selfish needs above those of the nation he represents, and has clearly taken on the role of Orwells Napoleon. It is impossible to ignore his shameful behaviour, and by marking an X next to his name you agree to stand complicit alongside Napoleon, firmly believing that some are more equal than others. You are actively and deliberately telling those less fortunate and less educated that they should continue to believe the plethora of lies, and that whilst there is a good story to tell, it unfortunately doesnt involve them. Herein lies the problem: a liberation party does not a political party make. Theres no doubt that the ANC were at least a semi-competent liberation party, but transitioning to a political party is no easy feat. Its one thing uniting the repressed against a common enemy; its another thing all together having to worry about text books, health care, inflation, unemployment rates, and all the utterly mundane stuff that people need when theyre just leading their normal lives. Gone are the days where the choral echoes of Umshini Wami actually meant something; the fight is over, the liberation is complete! Ayanda, how much longer you can continue to vote for a liberation party masquerading as a political party; how much longer do you deem it necessary to sentence our countrymen to a life of squalor whilst the connected few sip on their Johnny Blue; what is it going to take to get you -- and the countless others like you -- to give someone else a chance? The ANC does not deserve your unwavering support. A democracy only works when the public is willing to recognise a forlorn cause; when theyre able to surrender emotive ties to a party and vote in the best person for the job. Its gone past the point of debate now; the ANC as a whole is pretty much unconscionable and indefensible (anthropomorphisms aside). Without input from you, the only conclusion I can reach is that you are willingly complicit. Youre in fact part of the inner circle, fortunate enough to be more equal than your fellow countrymen. Thus, debate serves no purpose as youre clearly able to turn a blind-eye and continue on unabated. After all, canvassing on the internet where people are actually educated is far less effective than doing so in the townships where a vote can be bought for a streetwise two and a half-litre bottle of hope. As you havent been forthcoming, this shall be my last post on this matter. I do hope that one day your conscience gets the better of you and play your part in stopping the ANC-led rot that is destroying this country. It could take as little as a few Ayandas to ignite change, the real question is, are you willing to play your part?
