The BIG problem with the media in Kenya is that the political class own it and the truth is that there is no independent media in Kenya. The Standard Group (Standard), Baraza Ltd (KTN) and Radio Maisha are owned by Daniel Arap Moi and Joshua Kulei. Media Max or TV Africa Holdings (K24, Kameme, The People Daily, STV now transmitting Al Jazeera.) is owned by the Kenyatta family. Radio Umoja is owned by Raila Odinga. Lake Victoria FM and Nam Lolwe FM are owned by Jakoyo Midiwo. Charity Ngilu owns Mbaitu FM. William Ruto owns a 49 percent stake in Kass FM. Kaya FM is owned by Chirau Ali Mwakwere. Pilipili FM is owned by Najib Balala. Country Side FM is owned by Mututho and contrary to popular belief the frequency on which One FM broadcasts is owned by Alex Kosgey and not one Henry Otiende. So how do we expect our media to be objective and hold the political class accountable to the public.
