The BLVD Salon Panache Hosts MLK Day of Service Makeovers for Cancer Patients Today, Panache Salon on The BLVD, in partnership with the City of Lancaster and ProCare Hospice, hosted a special makeover session for patients of the Oncology Department at the Los Angeles County High Desert Regional Health Center. This event was one of more than 30 projects hosted this month by the City of Lancaster for its MLK Day of Service. “2015 represents the seventh year of our participation and we are so excited,” said Brandi Wheeler, Director of Marketing for ProCare Hospice. “Typically, we have provided makeovers to hospice patients at residential care and skilled nursing facilities. It is truly an honor to work with the oncology staff at the new High Desert Regional Health Center to offer makeovers to their patients who have been diagnosed with cancer and are undergoing chemotherapy treatments.” This year, Panache Salon (located at 747 W. Lancaster Blvd) agreed to provide makeover services to three oncology patients, including haircuts, styling and a beautifying makeup session. Shirley Griffiths, owner of Panache Salon, expressed, “Our team is so happy to be part of this project and we are so thankful to the City of Lancaster for giving us the opportunity to help others. This is a great way to give back and show that we care. There’s no better time than the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service to help others and make them feel special and beautiful. That’s really what we are all about here at Panache Salon.” After their makeover, the participants enjoyed a photo shoot by Julie Sutton of Julie Sutton Photography in Lancaster. Each of the ladies will receive a glamour shot from this experience, memorializing their day of beauty and renewal. “We are aware of the trials and tribulations these patients face, not only with terminal diagnoses, but experiencing pain, fear, changes in body image and more,” said Starlene Freebairn, Director of Patient Care Services for ProCare. “Certainly, these combined challenges at a most difficult period of their life can sometimes result in feelings of low self-esteem, depression and hopelessness. The ProCare slogan, ‘with your hope and our help,’ just seems to perfectly embrace the spirit of this project.” There are still many opportunities for the community to be involved in this year’s MLK Day of Service activities. The last project, the Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count, will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2015. Volunteers can still register for the Homeless Count project by visiting theycountwillyou.org.
