The Badwater ultramarathon is a 135-mile slog through desolate landscape in the 100-degree-plus heat of July. Runners fight pain, fatigue and sickness. Losing toenails is expected. Hallucinations, extreme weight loss and vomiting blood are not unheard of. About a third of the 100 runners accepted to Badwater don’t finish. But Nicole Matera, a 24-year-old from Murrieta, doesn’t plan to be among those who drop out.
