The Bandwagon -at City Center- not entirely successful as a show, - TopicsExpress

The Bandwagon -at City Center- not entirely successful as a show, is, however, sprinkled with a dozen delights, chief among them being Brian Stokes-Mitchells charming and seemingly effortless portrayal of the hero, Tony Hunter. He acts, sings, dances, does comic shtick and generally holds together this re-stitching of the original film script by Comden and Green. Hes given brisk competition by Tony Sheldons witty portrayal of the producer Jeffrey Cordoba (in the film, the Jack Buchanan part) whose pretentious musical -based on the Faust legend- is salvaged and turned into a hit by Tony. And who knew about Tracey Ullmans wondrous gifts as a musical performer? As the lyricist of this show, she sings marvelously, in a clear soprano, and brings her raffish charm with her. I could go on and on, but do yourself a favor, and grab a seat this weekend. Oh, did I mention the marvelous Dietz & Schwartz score? with stunning orchestrations by Larry Hochman.
