The Baptism And Crucifixion of Christ: The Mystery, Link, Significance And Lessons Part Three Lessons from Christs Baptism In this series we have been learning about the baptism of Christ, the meanings to events or circumstances around His baptism and the link between His baptism and His crucifixion. This lesson is a sequel to the previous two episodes on this topic. There are always valuable lessons to learn from Christs examples as we read them in the Bible. This topic therefore is no exception. Lets now dive into the ocean of the lessons from the baptism of Christ. 1. Baptism is for the forgiveness of sins. [Mark 1:4; Acts 2:38] 2. Christs baptism marks the beginning of His assignment on earth--to be an atonement for our sins, since by His baptism also He bore our sins so that we may live unto righteousness. [1 Pet 2:24] 3. The Holy Spirit comes upon us when we are baptised. [Mark 1:10-11] 4. Christs obedience unto baptism was a sign or an evidence of His humility [Matt 3:14-15] Humility was one of Christs idiosyncracies. 5. The Holy Trinity [God the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit] operates in unity. This was evidenced when the voice of God the Father was heard from heaven and the Holy Spirit descended on the Son. [Mark 1:10-11] 6. After baptism the Holy Spirit which comes upon us empowers us. [Mark 1:12; Acts 19:6] 7. Baptism is a rebirth. [John 3:3,5] 8. Baptism is not just a physical exercise but also spiritual. [John 3:5-6] 9. Jesus replied them I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. [John 3:5] Jesus fulfilled His own words by allowing Himself to be baptised also even though John deterred Him. Hear Jesus reply to John Let it be so now, for it is PROPER FOR US TO DO THIS TO FULFILL ALL RIGHTEOUSNESS. [Matt 3:15] John had no option than to obey to baptise Jesus. By this, Jesus was showing us an example. 1 Peter 2:21 reads To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, LEAVING YOU AN EXAMPLE that you should follow in His steps. 10. Baptism of water and the Spirit is essential to our salvation because it cleanses us of our sins and gives us a rebirth into righteousness. Jesus Himself declares that unless we are born of water and the Spirit [baptism] we cannot enter the kingdom of heaven, which is the ultimate goal of our salvation. May the Lord Jesus Christ Himself baptize us with the baptism of the Holy Spirit, that we may live unto righteousness and hence be delivered from the debt of death into life eternal life through Him!
