The Bards of Blaise by Jorge and Aceyork Guerrero Supladang Runner The Facebook has ceased to be a mere avenue for social relations among people who hold common interests, activities, tastes and preferences. From a mere repository of pictures and thoughts, it has transformed into a campaign machinery against abuses and corruption in the community. Accounts for actions and reforms now abound in FB. And most of them received thousands of likes, supports and shares. Their effect in the real world is also outstanding—leaders fell, corporations crumbled, crooks surrendered and unity expanded. As runners, pages on sports activism have caught our attention. And for us, the most interesting sports rants so far come from the account of Supladang Runner. According to her account, she is an Abs and Core Trainor at the Saracho Fitness Gym. She is a resident of Valenzuela City and a graduate of Valenzuela National High School, UP Diliman and FEU. We are not sure if the personal, work and education details she posted in her FB account are true. We are not even sure if she is a real “she” or not. But for her many friends, these infos are not important. What counts to her “fans” are her posts that never fail to shake their world. In “all-caps-Tagalog”, Supladang Runner lambasts these irregularities in the running community: sky-high registration fees; too commercialized events; failure of organizers to provide the needs of their participants; monopoly of schedules; and other issues affecting the lives of runners. Here are some examples of her all-caps-statuses: “SA RUNNING COMMUNITY, ANDAMENG PROFESSIONALS! MAY HENERAL NG KASWAPANGAN. COACH NG KABWAYAHAN. EDITOR NG KASINUNGALINGAN. DOKTOR NG PAGKAKAPERAHAN. AT MARAMING PANG IBA! HAYUPAKS!” “PARA SA IBA, NAGBAGO NA ANG IBIG SABIHIN NG SALITANG “SPORTS.” ITO’Y HINDI NA UKOL SA PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, KUNDI ISA NANG BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY. HAYUPAKS!” “HINDI PORKE’T KAYO ANG ORGANIZER NG EVENT AY INFALLIBLE NA KAYO! WALANG TAONG PALAGING TAMA, KALBO MAN O MAY BUHOK! MAKINIG NAMAN KAYO KUNG MINSAN SA MGA HINAING NG MGA RUNNERS NA NAGBUBUHOS NG PERA AT MARAMING SAKRIPISYO PARA SA INYO! TAO PO KAMI, HINDI ASO! HAYUPAKS!” “HA? P6,000 NA REGISFEE? AT DI MAN LANG MAGBIGAY KAHIT GAPATAK NA TUBIG? KAHAYUPAN NA YAN!!!!!! HAYUPAKS!” “HOY! WAG MO NAMANG SOLOHIN ANG KITA NG EVENT! SHARE MO NAMAN SA MGA TOTOONG NAGPAGOD! O DI KAYA’Y MAGBIGAY SA CHARITY! ANG HIRAP SA’YO, MAGPAPA-EVENT KA PARA LANG SA’YONG SARILING KABUTIHAN! TAMAAN KA SANA NG KIDLAT SA TUMBONG!” Sometimes, Supladang Runner also castigates erring runners: “MAY MGA RUNNER NA PALAGING MAY DALANG ELECTRIC FAN! KAHIT TUMATAKBO, MAY BITBIT NA ELECTRIC FAN! OBVIOUS E, KASI PAG DUMARATING SILA, NAGIGING MAHANGIN!” “WAG NAMANG UBUSIN ANG SWELDO SA RUNNING SHOES, GEARS AT REGISFEE! MAGTIRA KA NAMAN PARA SA PAMILYA MO!” “SUSMARYA! PATI SA SIMBAHAN, NAKA-FINISHER SHIRT! SIGE KA, BAKA MADALIHIN NI GOD ANG “FINISH LINE” MO!” Though the lines sound funny—and sometimes, vulgar—they made a great impact in the running world. Following the cues from Supladang Runner, runners have become more vocal against abusive event organizers. Organizers are now trying to evaluate their registration fees and services. And the implementation and monitoring of events have become stricter and deeper. Well, many thanks to the tickling posts of Supladang Runner—posts that are simply HAYUPAKS! *** BARD NOTES: Happy bard-reading to Congresswoman Imelda R. Marcos, Mayor Chevylle V.
