The Barn Swallow As I sit here and watch summer go into fall, I - TopicsExpress

The Barn Swallow As I sit here and watch summer go into fall, I watch the Barn Swallow’s slowly move on their way to where they go as fall approaches. It is now the fourth week of August and I had Swallows lingering about the place; realizing that they are sending their scouts to wherever they go until May when they again appear. Years ago I always wanted to make friends with this species for they kept the bugs and other flying insects away to where I could enjoy a dip in the pond, sit on the porch, stand in the Barn, etc. A few years ago, as I was standing outside my machine shed, a chick fell from the old electric wire that runs from same to the Barn. I tried to protect it, but the Swallow’s attacked, nipped me on the head, and kept me inside the shed. They are very protective of their own. We’ll last year one of them flew into my garage and knowing a cat was inside that I use to keep unwanted critters out, I went gently over to him/her and touched him/her to fly out of the main door which he/she did. I then, thinking that this is a good thing for saving a Barn Swallow’s life, went to my swing, out by the Railroad tracks and sit down. All of a sudden, all of the Swallows, too many to count, landed on the two string clothes line about ten feet from me and sit looking towards me. One Swallow flew overhead. Remembering what happened a few years ago, my thought was…can’t make it to the garage, take what they give you. We’ll they flew off and I felt blessed for I believe they, as a flock, were saying thanks! I haven’t thought of this for a while, but yesterday, on the 27th of August, I was sitting on the North porch and about two dozen swallows flew towards me and then turned overhead as if a flyby had just happened. They are now gone for the winter and I hope my new found friends will have the sanctuary that I hope I give them here. Love the country!
