The Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series Season 16 Presents: Gary Ketterling, PhD (VCSU) “Explorations in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem” 7PM Thursday April 17 at the Barnes County Museum. Exploring the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem engages one in the complexity of an ecosystem-undergone change over time. This presentation will focus on ecosystem concepts, wildlife issues (such as the reintroduction of the gray wolf to the park, elk and bison populations), consequences to stakeholders, invasive species, and the evidence of climate change in the largest national park in the lower forty-eight states. A key focus will be the Lamar Valley called the American Serengeti where wolf, bear, bison and elk interactions and populations are prevalent. Hear about the wolf packs and wolves that have thrived and had an impact on the Yellowstone ecology with their reintroduction in 1995. In addition current controversial issues that affect the Yellowstone Ecosystem will be discussed. Dr. Ketterling is Coordinator of the Great Plains Education Center at VCSU, where he plans programs and professional development for teachers and students. He has traveled with university students and teachers to Yellowstone for seven years to study the wildlife and ecology of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Gary is originally from LaMoure and received his Bachelors from North Dakota State University (Biology education) and his Ph.D (Science Education) from the University of Iowa. He has worked with a resource laboratory in Texas (Southwest Educational Development Laboratories), coordinator of youth programs at the Morton Arboretum in Chicago, coordinator of Problem Based Learning at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Illinois, and taught at several Universities.
