Originally know as the “Beach Club,” later known as the “Harbor Patio” and finally as “The Patio,” this place of entertainment is thought to have been build in 1945 by Lester Simpson. This was a very popular place for young people to meet, grab something to eat and, on most nights to dance. Music was provided by a jukebox but on occasion there would be a live band. On one of those particular nights, the Rockport High School Swing Band, led by Bill McGrath, provided the music. One of the owners claimed that Buddy Holly and his band stopped by to see if they could play for donations. They were mostly unknown at that time and had played a gig in Corpus Christi and needed gas money to get back to Houston. The foundation for the present Aransas County Navigation District office was once the dancefloor for the Beach Club. Photograph Courtesy of Bob Albin.
