The Best of the Net(flix) SNOWPIERCER - Just added 11/1 to Streaming on Netflix I belong to a film group here on FB and those members who have the money to go see films in the theatre were raving about this film and I agree wholeheartedly. This film presents a post-apocalyptic future that Ive yet to see on film. Plausible but as dreary and nihilistic as Mad Max, Blade Runner and others. Basically, due to idiot Republicans, global warming turns into global freezing and the last, best hope for mankind rides around the world on a supertrain. Of course, as is today, the 1% control the most resources and party like its 1999 while the rest of humanity hovers, filthy, diseased, disrespected in the dark, crowded cargo cars. Finally, the 99% revolt. The story moves swiftly. One motivation: Get to the engine car. The film is written and directed by South Korean director Joon-ho Bong (or more correctly, Bong Joon-ho) who wrote and directed The Mother and The Host. Here again, he trusts his material and tells the story in an ever-increasing pace to a eye-popping finish. The effects, both regular and computer-generated are great and the CGI here takes a jump towards reality as big as Spielbergs dinosaurs. An international cast, including the young actress from The Host, Tilda Swinton, a pre-buffed and polished Chris Evans, Octavia Spencer from The Help, Ed Harris, John Hurt and an all-grown up Jamie Bell (little Billy Elliot) provide solid work. Tilda has the most fun playing a character that would be at home teaching the dark arts at Hogwarts.
