The Big Building on the left in the background with the American Flag on top is The Newberry-Clay Shoe Co. ~ Founded in 1900 and incorporated in 1901. The wholesale shoe company was located at 10th Street, and across an alley from an entrance to its jobbing house. Jeff Newberry was the president, and George B. Clay was the vice president. Ten years later, Newberry retired and the company was renamed the Norvell-Chambers Shoe Co. The factory divorced from the jobbing house and was operated by Mountain State Shoe Co., a subsidiary corporation. In 1913, Mountain State Shoe Co. was taken over by Cincinnati businessmen Walter E. Perry and George W. Norvell, who again changed the name of the business -- this time to Perry-Norvell Shoe Co. Seven years later, G. R. Kinney Co. of New York City acquired the stock and two years after that moved to a modern, fireproof structure at 25th Street and Guyan Avenue. Shoes from this company were sold to 330 of Kinneys retailers. That plant had 350 employees, 60 percent of whom were women, and the plants gross annual sales were in excess of $1.5 million. In 1928, it got its present name -- finally becoming Kipling Shoe Co., and it moved to Milton about 40 years ago. Today, it has locations at 1221 Main St. in Milton, along with another store at the Route 2 Bypass in Point Pleasant, and a third location in Elkins, W.Va
