The Binondo Church is one of the most beautiful churches in the Philippines with its amazing frescos, intricate altar, and Spanish baroque architecture that dates back 400 years. In contrast, the Binondo Chinese Parish, located just at the back of the Binondo Church, seems so small, boring and utterly plain. Then I started to notice the fresh flowers that are beautifully arranged every week. I began to appreciate the different choirs who shared their talents and made every Mass more vibrant and sincere. I learned to value the lectors and commentators who took extra care to pronounce the English words clearly despite their Chinese ancestry. The work of volunteers transformed the plain parish into a warm and welcoming place of worship, a place to call home. Church architecture and design does matter. It shows how we try to reflect God’s glory by praising and honoring Him through the material things He has provided. But each of us should contribute something so that the church will not just be a museum of art, but a living Church proclaiming the goodness of God. Cecil Lim
