The Bittern has finished its last mainline journey, travelling - TopicsExpress

The Bittern has finished its last mainline journey, travelling from London Kings Cross to Lincoln Central Train Station. Restored more than eight years ago, after 30 years out of service, Bittern No. 4464 would need another overhaul to remain in service on Englands mainlines. Steam locomotive boilers are required to have an overhaul every seven years for mainline running but only every ten for working on a preserved railway. This means Bittern will actually be moving back to the Watercress Line in Hampshire, where she will reside for the duration of 2015. Bittern was scheduled to have an overhaul at the Royal Scot Locomotive and General Trust workshops at LNWR Crewe, but the facility is busy, most notably restoring No. 46100 Royal Scot.
