The Bong Connection. This is by far my favourite comfort food. Blog writer Sandipa from the bongmomscookbook calls it the zen of comfort food. I tend to agree. Though i chanced upon it quite late in my life. The Bangali Masurir Dal. My Sigh of relief food. 1 cup masoor dal - pressure cook to 4 whistles. 1 onion sliced 1 tomato chopped 1 tsp panch phoron * equal quantities of fenugreek seeds, nigella, cumin, mustard and aniseed 1/2 tsp turmeric 1/2 tsp red chilli powder Salt and sugar to taste 3 - 4 tbsps mustard oil 4 tsps lemon juice Chopped coriander for garnish In a small pan heat the oil and add panch phoron. Let it splutter. Add the onions. Fry till translucent. Add tomatoes. Fry till soft and pulpy. Add turmeric and red chilli powder. Add to the dal and bring to a rolling boil. You may need to add some water to bring it to the consistency you like. Add salt and sugar. Add lemon juice and coriander leaves for garnish. Serve with aloo shedho and hot steamed rice. Now mix dal and rice and shedho - eat with your fingers and reach a state of mindlessness.
