The Boss Pt 2 by Upstart The night filling continued without further incident. Karen reminded Ben what he should be doing and he complied with his stock smile of arrogance. There was no overt disrespect, merely a complete absence of respect. He spent the next two hours undertaking his one, simple task with a lazy exactitude. At last they were finished. The floor gleamed. Her team had faced the store with practiced perfection. Tins and other goods were aligned on their shelves with a military precision. The place smelled fresh, expectant. Proud. Karen nodded her approval. Her team moved off to collect their jackets and other items. Karen was always the last to leave. Her bunch of jangling master keys were a badge of office. This store was her responsibility. As were the people in her team. “Ben. Just wait a moment please.” She spoke softly, and he pulled back from the others as they streamed out of the door and into the cool, midnight air. He stood by the entrance looking at her with a bored expectancy. “Wait there.” Karen moved over to a desk and logged into a screen. She entered the code which would switch the store lights to standby and disable some of the in store surveillance cameras. Only the ones she wanted to. The bright lines of multicoloured aisles were plunged into monochrome gloom. “Ben. There’s one more little thing I’d like you to do for me. You see, I think I may have not given you quite the right job.” Karen looked over at Ben. His face was blank, neutral. The absence of his normal … cocksure smile felt like a small victory to her. She continued with what she knew was a steely, management tone of inevitability. “I want you to take a trolley and get two plastic buckets from the household cleaning section. Get the big ones with metals handles. Then go to the soup aisle and get, let’s see, eighty cans of soup. Bring all the Cambell’s cream of chicken that’s on display; it’s my favourite. Have you got that Ben? Bring them back here.” Ben looked as if he wanted to ask why, but she had guessed that his arrogant nature would inhibit his desire to seek understanding. She was proved right; another small victory. He took the trolley and slouched off into the gloom of the store. The night time lighting was sufficient for him to find the things she’d asked for, but she expected him to be slow, and he was. Finally he reappeared and trundled the trolley to a halt in front of her.
