The Boston Debate League is hiring FOUR positions: Director of After-School Programs After-School Program Manager Two (2) Evidence-Based Argumentation Coordinators (Find all positions posted at: bostondebate.org/about-us/new-job-opportunities/ ) The Boston Debate League (BDL) is a non-profit organization that works in partnership with the Boston Public Schools (BPS) to support academic debate teams in Boston public high schools and middle schools and to train BPS teachers to use debate as part of their classroom practice. Since its founding in 2005, BDL has quickly become a major force in the education reform movement. The BDL brings together an active community of students, teachers, administrators, and community leaders devoted to improving education and the life skills of urban youth in Boston. The BDL’s mission is to measurably improve students’ academic achievement and their expectations of themselves. It seeks to do this by engaging as many Boston public high school and middle school students as possible through academic debate. We have two programs at the BDL: the After-School Debate League and the Evidence-Based Argumentation (EBA) Initiative. EBA is a professional development initiative that works with BPS teachers to support their use of argumentation and debate in their classrooms as a way to engage their students in the daily curriculum and with one another (more explanation included in position description). This curriculum is in contrast to the dominant pedagogy of lectures, memorization and testing. Our goal is to develop analytical skill sets among students. We are looking for two experienced educators with either a high school or middle school teaching background in an urban school system to help us build relationships with EBA member schools and develop curriculum to more effectively implement the Evidence-Based Argumentation Initiative in BPS. The After-School Debate League is a league that supports the growth of large debate teams in high schools and middle schools across BPS. This program started almost 10 years ago with only 25 students and one staff member and now we have over 850 students, 10 staff, and approximately 500 volunteers supporting the League. We are recruiting both a program manager and a Director for this program to help us continue to deepen the League. We will be reviewing candidates in the coming weeks and are eager to reach out to a diverse and skilled group of potential candidates who could join the team and enthusiastically support the BDL mission.
