The British Association of Supported Employment holds its annual awards later this year. We’ll be sharing with you some nominations made for customers, staff, businesses and supporting teams of Pluss. Richard Morgan – Pluss Job Broker – Barnstaple Richard currently focusses on the Pluss Traineeship® programme. Currently Pluss employs individuals on a 6 month contract to enable them to return to the labour market in a safe and secure environment and give them support to develop and enhance their skills to lead to sustainable employment in the local labour market. Richard soon recognised for this programme to be effective he had to forge new links with external employers –specifically with local manufacturers to identify positions that the trainees would be able to move on to. Richard identified local employer networks that he could attend to promote the traineeship programme and the skills of the developing workforce we were nurturing. Richard undertakes intensive engagement with every individual who comes through the Traineeship® programme, looking at their goals and aspirations, then sets about finding external employers to match this criteria. An outstanding example of employer engagement was to support a young man who had a history of self harm and depression. He had never worked or completed any college course successfully as his mental health always prevented him from achieving. He was brought onto the Traineeship® programme to work in a Pluss factory in Barnstaple. He was keen to develop a career in manufacturing so Richard spoke to a local company. Rather than put the job seeker through the stress of an initial interview with the company Richard arranged for the operations manager from the company to undertake a tour of our factory and discreetly observe him at work. From there he was offered a work experience placement to build on his skills. Richard negotiated transport support from another member of staff as the shift started at 6a.m. the job seeker impressed and they offered him a contract with them. He has now completed his machine programme qualification, he has also won the quarterly award for most productive staff member. There is an expectation from DWP that 55% of all trainees would move into sustainable employment. Currently in Barnstaple we have 13 internal traineeship places. We are achieving around 65% of trainees into sustainable employment and the majority of these outcomes are down to Richard’s involvement.
