The Broadway Bradford Westfield has commenced construction on a major new retail destination at the heart of Bradford. Owned by European real estate investor & fund manager Meyer Bergman, the 570,000 sq. ft. development will be anchored by Marks & Spencer, Debenhams and Next. Bradford ranks in the top 10 UK centres for potential new retail development according to CACI and the Broadway development will transform the City’s retail and leisure offer by creating a mix of more than 70 fashion, food, and leisure brands. The Broadway is expected to open in Autumn 2015 and excellent progress has already been made on leasing with more than 50% of the scheme committed including major pre-lets to Top Shop/Top Man, River Island, Boots and Sainsbury’s. Bradford is a vibrant city with ambitious development plans and boasts the 3rd largest economy in the Yorkshire and Humber region, contributing £8.3 billion per annum to the UK economy with a population of 522,000, predicted to be the 5th fastest growing city in the UK outside of the capital. With Bradford already home to a number of corporate headquarters including Morrison’s, Yorkshire Building Society and Hallmark Cards, the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council has committed to building on this solid foundation by launching the £35m City Centre Growth Zone initiative offering the following potential benefits to retailers at the Broadway development. Bradford Community Development of this scale and significance in Bradford is an important part of the regeneration of the city. Westfield is working with Bradford Council to maximise those job opportunities for the local community. The construction alone will provide 1,500 jobs, including 15 apprenticeships. Post-opening, the development is expected to create around 2,500 permanent new jobs across retail and hospitality. The opening of Broadway will also complete the Connecting the City projects, opening up a significantly improved access across the city centre and especially to the Cathedral quarter and Little Germany. The project represents an investment of around £275 million, which will provide a catalyst for further investment and kick-start other schemes elsewhere in the city. Finally, this scheme will put Bradford back on the retail map and establish quality retail within the city centre.
