The Brooklyn Kings Chess Club of P.S. 31 Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY needs your help to travel to this years Nationals in Dallas, TX, May 9-12. Our chess team has competed in the United States Chess Federations National Elementary (K-6) Championship every year since 2001. Last year we came in third place! We have finished in the top five in different sections every year, even winning the national championship one year. Previous members of our chess club have gone on to strengthen our districts middle school chess teams, the best in the country. In fact, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof writes of Brooklyn Kings alumnus Carlos Tapias inspiring middle school chess journey, highlighting the importance of supporting chess programs in inner-city schools. nytimes/2013/01/31/opinion/kristof-chess-champs-and-charity.html Unfortunately, due to massive federal and city-wide budget cuts, the Brooklyn Kings are facing the possibility of not being able to compete in this years national tournament. Our students and PTA are struggling to raise the funds necessary to ensure that these kids get to compete with the countrys top chess players this spring.
