The Buildings located next to Watermeadows are part of the Splasher beacon system used during the war. It was called Splasher 16. Splashers beacons were ground-based Medium Frequency beacon systems developed by the RAF and utiilised by the USAAF for assembling formations. It was a somewhat complex D/F system involving several transmitters all sending the same call-sign but on different frequencies. The call sign was changed very regularly to confuse the enemy. In April 1943 the RAF had 12 Splasher sites and the following were made available to the Eighth. No.4 Louth, No.5 Mundesley, No.6 Scole, No.7 Braintree, No.10 Windlesham, No.16 Brampton. Splasher 16 was used by the 1st Air Division and controlled by the Headquarters here in the village. It is understood that these buildings and the shelter behind might be the best intact examples of a Splasher unit left in the country. I am still gather information on the buildings, and will update as i find out more. Does anyone know who owns them as it would be great to talk to them. Ive gathered the information from the USAAF 1st Air Division Headquarters archives, if anyone would like to know more just let me know or check out the 1st Air Division Headquarters Heritage Society website or FB Thanks for wanting to know more. :)
