The Bulgarian Reality By Rossen Tsanov for ДАНСwithme World Because I’ve been posting a lot in Bulgarian lately, I will summarize the situation in Bulgaria for my American and foreign friends with a hypothetical analogy in the American context to help you understand the situation. Imagine the 1920s, Al Capone and Lucky Luciano rule the streets and the criminal underground – that was Bulgaria in the 1990s where the mafia ran its illicit activities from the streets, as per definition. Gradually, they gained more influence and started buying out (or even creating and implanting) politicians, judges and prosecutors while at the same time assuming control of strategic sectors of the industry and the economy. Fast forward to 2013, when they have acquired close to full control of all three branches of statehood and state institutions, the media, and the main political parties in a state of façade democracy and a fake market economy. They are no longer the mafia, they now own and represent Bulgaria the nation state - at home, abroad, in Brussels, in Washington, and especially in Moscow where those crooks are traditionally trained and warmly welcomed. They’ve turned into bureaucrats and businessmen that get elected into office legitimately and use the mechanisms of the state to establish the tyranny of cronyism and oligarchy. In other words going back to our the analogy with America, Al Capone has won the elections over Lucky Luciano and is now the President of the United States. He doesn’t need the means of mafia anymore, he now owns the country and achieves his goals through the country’s institutions and administration. Hard to imagine, isn’t it? Well, it’s a reality for us. That’s why people are on the streets and critical mass is building.
