The Butler (2013) Plot: Historical drama directed by Lee Daniels and starring Forest Whitaker. The film tells the story of Cecil Gaines (Whitaker)s 34-year career working as head butler at the White House. Beginning his tenure under President Eisenhower (Robin Williams), Cecil would see another seven presidents come and go throughout his career and was present at the highest level of the state during some of the most tumultuous periods in the 20th century including the American Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War. The ensemble cast includes John Cusack, James Marsden, Liev Schreiber, Alan Rickman and Oprah Winfrey. Review: I really enjoyed this emotional drama which follows the story of a butler who worked for various presidents in America. All of the actors put in extremely intense performances which made the movie a great watch. Even the small roles like Robin Williams and Terence Howard were great to watch and the storyline was well up,to together along with the script. As a black person, this movie really did touch my heart and I really did feel for Whitakers character who had to make some difficult decisions throughout his life. With his family going through turmoil, along with his intense working career, its a shock that he kept it all together and was still able to be a great husband and father. In all, this is a brilliantly put together movie and a definite must watch. Round-Up: After watching 42 in the same day which was also about racism in America, it really does bring to light what Black people had to go through in America. Im glad that the director was able to bring together such a A list cast because it brings some professionalism to the movie. It is a deep drama which might offend some people, but you just have to remember that this is a true story and with Obama coming into office, its amazing how things have changed. With 12 Years a Slave coming out in the same year, which won the Oscar for best movie, there seems to be a trend of movies that cover early black history in America which is going down a storm in Hollywood. Its just a shame that it happened in the first place. Budget: $30million Worldwide Gross: $180million I recommend this movie to people who are into there intense dramas about a butler working for different presidents in America over the years. 7/10
