The Canterbury DHB Community and Public Health division has lifted a health warning that was issued for the lower parts of the Conway River after a chemical spill resulting from a truck accident on State Highway 1 in North Canterbury. The truck was carrying a corrosive de-greasing chemical (ChemTech CT14), which spilled into a tributary of the Conway River, potentially affecting the river downstream of SH1. Dr Alistair Humphrey, Canterbury Medical Officer of Health, says Environment Canterbury have carried out water testing which indicates contamination well below that which would be a risk to public health. The Lower Conway is now deemed safe for properties who use it as a source of drinking water and recreational use of the river can be resumed.
