The Cardinal sitting on the snow covered Winterberry branch clearly suggests Winter in Virginia. Virginia designated the northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) as official state bird in 1950. One of Americas favorite backyard birds, cardinals are distinctive in appearance and song. Winterberry (Ilex verticillata), is a species of holly native to eastern North America in the United States and southeast Canada, from Newfoundland west to Ontario and Minnesota, and south to Alabama.
