The Castrato Super Star of Baroque Opera Carlo Broschi - TopicsExpress

The Castrato Super Star of Baroque Opera Carlo Broschi Farinelli (1705 to 1782) was a castrated male soprano who achieved the highest level of approbation in the world of Baroque opera in Italy and Europe. Most of his operas were compose by his own brother Riccardo Broschi. He portrayed angels, Apollo, princes and classical Greek mythological figures. He is considered to be the greatest opera singer of all time, having the extraordinary and superhuman ability to reach the highest notes and lowest notes, and to sustain a long note for a surprisingly long time. In this clip from the 1994 biopic Farinelli, we observe the carnival-like atmosphere of the Baroque opera house in Venice, where audiences could eat a meal or drink tea as in the case of the young lady that ignore Farinelli and makes a noise with her tea cup to Farinelli and the entire audiences dismay. We may never know what Farinellis voice was truly like until we can get a time machine ready, but in the film, a combination of the voices of countertenor Derek Lee Ragin and soprano Ewa Malas Godlewska served as the voice of Farinelli.
