The Castro Street sidewalk project will resume this evening, after - TopicsExpress

The Castro Street sidewalk project will resume this evening, after taking a break for Frameline and Pride. A description is attached. The project is still on track to be complete by early October, in time for the Castro Street Fair. Thank you to everyone for your continued patience. You can already see the dramatic positive impact of a wider sidewalk. Once the project is complete in a few months, itll be truly magnificent. This phase will be significantly less disruptive than phase 1, though it will still be disruptive. The interior sidewalk will be demolished and replaced to match the previously poured exterior sidewalk. The Rainbow Honor Walk plaques will be placed in the sidewalk as part of this work. This sidewalk work will occur block by block in four segments (schedule described in the link). Each of the four segments will take about two weeks, meaning that the sidewalks themselves will be completed by mid-August. The sidewalk demolition, which is noisy, will occur in the evening on a few nights, from 8-10 p.m., in order to minimize impacts on businesses and also to avoid middle-of-the-night jackhammering. (Yes, businesses open in the evening will be impacted. We are thoroughly notifying merchants in advance.) After the sidewalks are complete, the utility poles will be moved to the curb; the Muni overhead wire poles will be replaced closer to the curb; the new street trees will be planted; Castro Street will be repaved (the current paving is temporary), as will 18th Street from Hartford to Collingwood and the Market/Castro intersection; the rainbow crosswalks will be painted at 18th and Castro; and Jane Warner Plaza will be refurbished and upgraded. There will be a few overnight efforts in August, so please utilize this website so that you know in advance when that overnight work will occur.
