The Catholic Calendar and Daily Meditation Friday, June 6, 2014 Friday of the Seventh Week of Easter St. Norbert, bishop Scripture from todays Liturgy of the Word: new.usccb.org/bible/readings/060614.cfm Acts 25:13b-21 Psalm 103:1-2, 11-12, 19-20ab John 21:15-19 A reflection on todays Sacred Scripture: Jesus said to him, Feed my sheep. (John 21:17) We are truly blessed in our time to have saintly men chosen to steer the Bark of Peter, the Church, in submission to, and in cooperation with, the Holy Spirit. Despite those few in history designated as bad popes, as well as other pontiffs who fell short of the high standards of the office, the Holy Spirit has guided the Church in continuously teaching sound doctrine and morals from the very beginning. Fifty-two of the first fifty-four popes were saints. Approximately one-third of all the popes who reigned are revered as saints in the Church. Prior to becoming Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Ratzinger noted the historical reality of weak individuals who succeeded St. Peter at various times in the history of the Church. Nevertheless, he attests that even this reveals Gods providential care: We are not celebrating men but praising the Lord, who does not abandon the Church and who desires to manifest that He is the rock through Peter. The Lord saves through those who are flesh and blood. (see Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, Called to Communion 1991) - Lawrence Martone, OCDS
