The Center for Church and Prison, Inc. invites you its first annual public forum Thursday February 6, 2014, 6:30pm @St John Missionary Baptist Church, 230 Warren St Roxbury MA 02119, parking available. This forum falls in line with our goal of strategic solution development and intervention in the high rate of incarceration and recidivism in the United States prison system embodied in the four “Rs”: RESPECT for human dignity in the United States criminal justice systems. REFORM: In the sentencing laws towards prison reform and reduction in mass incarceration and the high rate of recidivism. REHABILITATION: Emphasis on preventive program development and treatment: education and skills development for employment possibility; In-prison emphasis on job readiness programs for adequate reintegration and economic mobility. RESTORATION: Post-Prison emphasis on employment, emotional wellness, and job creation. Emphasis on family, community and faith-based organizations support in the restorative process for Returning Citizens towards strategic reduction in mass incarceration, emotional stability for effective reintegration and readjustment to society after prison life. In Massachusetts, parole eligibility has declined dramatically after Dominic Cinellis fatal shooting of Officer John Maguire in December 2010. This has led to the dismissal of the previous Parole Board, the passing of Three-Strikes sentencing laws and increase in prosecutorial discretions in Massachusetts criminal justice policies. The consequences are harsher sentences and increased incarceration especially for minority men/women/youth in Massachusetts. This is in addition to less parole for eligible candidates including Arnie King and Tina Williams, exasperation among inmates, and overcrowding in Massachusetts Department of Correction. Panelists include: Professor Margret Burnham: Northeastern Univ. School of Law, and Founder: Civil Rights and Restorative Justice Project; Senator Will Brownsberger, Chair of Public Service and Judiciary Committees; Tina Williams, M.S.W, Certificate in Urban Leadership in Clinical Social Work-Simmons Graduate Sch, Parolee for over 35 years; Arnie King: Incarcerated over 40 years, serving a life without parole sentence since 1972, and represented on the panel by: Maurice Alves and Abrigal Forrester; Mr. Chuck Turner, Former Boston City Councilman; Professor Wallace Holohan: Northeastern Univ. School of Law and Founder of: Prisoners Rights Clinic. Visit churchandprison.org and arnoldking.org
