The Challenge I often rail against the mindless butchery that dualistic and theistic religions commit on humankind. This applies especially to the Judeo-Islamic-Christian ‘good versus evil’ duality that dominates western civilization. Somehow this institutionalized paranoia always manifests as ‘my good’ versus ‘your evil’ for true-believers, and that explains why the world is in flames. But, it is not fair of me to just criticize these myopic morons; I really should offer them a solution. Fact is, the solution is pretty simple, so here it is: Each and every citizen of earth will receive a copy of Longchenpa’s ‘Treasury of the Dharmadhatu’ (Chos dbyings mdzod) translated into their own language. Now, to be fair, Longchenpa’s text plunges headlong into the ‘non-meditation’ aspect of spacious presence, and I have yet to find any westerners who can take off their theistic skullcaps and leap straight into naked awareness. So, we will also give every citizen of earth a copy of Dakpo Tashi Namgyal’s ‘Clarifying the Natural State’ (Phyag rgya chen po’i khrid yig chen mo gnyug ma’i de nyid gsal ba). So, that gives us one book on Dzogchen and one on Mahamudra. That’s it - problem solved! Every citizen will receive these two books at birth. That’s about 7.2 billion right now, and another 100,000 by the time I finish writing this. Better get printing! As Keith Dowman says in the introduction to his translation, “Our principal aspiration is for Dzogchen to take root in the West and heal the deep rifts that Judeo-Christian dualism has created in the meta-structural consciousness of the People of the Book. For this to occur, the supra-cultural meaning of Dzogchen should be lifted by its existential bootstraps out of its monastic isolation and primping cultishness into the clear light of day.” To that let’s add one quote from Tashi Namgyal as translated by Erik Pema Kunsang, “When mindfulness and your mind are no longer different entities, everything turns into the nature of mindful presence and it is smooth sailing from then on.” Bingo! The mindfulness of Mahamudra and the awareness of Dzogchen – that is how you bring sanity to planet earth. This may all appear tongue in cheek, but it is quite serious. This is the solution. If we dont turn around the momentum of pathological theism in an over-populated world, then humanity has already seen its best days. I leave it to younger hearts and wiser minds to take up the challenge. Namgyal and Longchenpa would be a good place to start.
