The Chattanooga Campaign is in many ways one of the two classic campaigns of the Western theater. Here the Union Army included the best and the brightest of the Union Army, including the only time where almost all the victors of 1865 served in a single campaign under arms together at the same time, and the Confederate Army had on paper a position of impregnable strength that no action on the part of its enemies, again on paper, should have been able to redress. And in four weeks all that strength was in ruins, Bragg was promoted to command of the Confederate armies, the Army of Tennessee was in Georgia for the next campaign for the second time after two costly battles, it spent most of those four weeks in yet another attempt to depose its commander and forgetting about the enemy until compelled to do so, and Grant won a campaign in spite of the events unfolding in inverse order to how he planned them.
