The Chicago Sun-Times columnist Marc Brown wrote that Gov. Pat Quinn never really said the 2011 state tax increase should be temporary, so Quinn really isn’t breaking any promises in his calls to make the tax hike permanent. Nothing could be further from the truth. Quinn has lied about tax increases time and again. In 2010, Quinn campaigned for re-election on the platform that he would veto any state tax increase above 33%. After winning the gubernatorial race, Quinn proceeded to sign a 67% tax hike into law. At his press conference on Jan. 12, 2011, Quinn noted that the tax hike would be temporary: “We have some temporary tax increases that are designed to pay our bills, get Illinois back on fiscal sound footing and make sure that our state has a strong economy.” Now Quinn wants to make the temporary tax hike permanent.
