The China trip was extremely intense and satisfying. I am grateful - TopicsExpress

The China trip was extremely intense and satisfying. I am grateful to my good friend and collaborator, Johan Hartle, for facilitating it. The two of us were in an almost incessant discussion about theory and politics during our high-speed rail travel. We also had terrific discussions with students about realism at SIMA at Hangzhou, held lectures at the CSMST at the University of Nanjing, and wide-ranging discussion about, amongst other things, post-Deng China with colleagues at SIMA, Nanjing and Shanghai. Some of these intellectuals were from the Academy of the Social Sciences in Shanghai and therefore had a close connection with the CPC. While the conversations were mostly quite forthright and open, there did seem to be palpable discomfiture when we raised the recent labour struggles in Guangdong and Jiangxi as well as an ecological struggle that also had recently taken place in Hangzhou. We spent some time with Zhao Qianfan of Tongji University in Shanghai, who is translating my contribution to the Cambridge Companion to Adorno, and Zhang Liang, of the University of Nanjing, who is editing the volume, who informs me that it will be out next Spring. Looking forward to that!
