The City of Crestview Police Department responded to North Okaloosa Medical Center last night, January 24, 2014, around 9:30 p.m., in reference to a male that had been shot in the leg. When Officers arrived on scene, they were advised that the victim had been shot in the leg by an unknown person, in the area of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Grimes Avenue. The victim, who was identified as 18 year old Carlos Ricardo Matus, was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. Investigators responded to the scene, and later interviewed Matus at Sacred Heart Hospital. During the interview, it was revealed that Matus was in the company of two other juvenile males, and one of them was “looking” at a .9mm pistol, when it was discharged accidentally, striking Matus in the leg. Matus was driven to the hospital by the juvenile males, where the story of an unknown shooter was fabricated. One of the juveniles was arrested on an unrelated, outstanding Order to Take Into Custody and was transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice. The names of the juveniles are being withheld. Investigators will continue to investigate this case, and charges, if any, stemming from this incident will be provided in a future release.
