The City of Edgerton, Kansas has spent thousands of dollars on median strips and relocating a nearby entrance to Edgerton Lake in recent months in an attempt to establish a quiet zone at the Nelson Street grade crossing in the downtown area. Thus far, the Federal Railroad Administration has refused to certify the crossing as an official quiet zone. BNSF trains are still required to sound their horns. Newly-installed signs on both sides of the crossing saying No Train Horn. have been removed. The city and the crossing designer are a bit at odds because the FRA has ruled that some additional modifications are required. No one was publicly said what those modifications are and how much they will cost. These two pictures were taken Wednesday morning, Sept. 3, 2014. An eastbound BNSF train is shown in Photo Two.
