The City of Tshwane’s clean-up operation, Operation I CAN yielded great results with its operation held last night in Sunnyside, Hatfield and Arcadia. Operation I CAN is part of the City’s efforts to regenerate the inner city to create a safe and healthy environment where people feel secure to work and live in. Region 3 - the central city area, has started a campaign in August 2012 to clean the inner city and enforce municipal bylaws. This project involves various departments of the city and focus amongst others on the removal of illegal advertising, illegal structures on council owned road reserves, illegal formal and informal trade activities, illegal public and private transport activities, illegal - electricity connections, water use and spillage and the illegal occupation of council owned properties. Broken streetlights, traffic signals, damaged street signage and potholes are being fixed and overall cleaning of the areas done. Town planning, national building and health regulations are enforced, and homeless and vagrant challenges addressed. Last night’s Operation I CAN was also supported by SAPS - Sunnyside Cluster, SAPS Liquor Officers and the Department of Home Affairs. During last night’s operation the following was achieved: • ten streetlights were fixed, • 1113 illegal advertisement boards removed in Hatfield, Arcadia and Sunnyside. • 10 illegal outdoor advertisement boards removed that obstructed CCTV cameras • 7 illegal electrical connections disconnected and removed) • 21 CCTV camera sites were visited and obstructions removed • Areas cleaned and washed with wash truck: Edmond & Struben Brown street Lilian Ngoyi street Nelson Mandela and Rissik Grant & Kgosi Mampuru 11th and Boom 7th and Bazaar Sisulu street Apies river (Kanaal) as from Boom up till Rissik and Nelson Mandela • ARRESTS: • 8 Drunken driving arrests o 4 Drunken driving (Sunnyside) o 2 Drunken driving - Sunnyside o 2 Drunken driving - (Brooklyn) • 60 illegal Immigrant arrests o 34 illegal immigrants in Hatfield o 13 illegal immigrants in Sunnyside o 13 illegal immigrants (Brooklyn) o 3 Contravention of Immigration Act • 5 dockets opened against business owners for contravention of immigration act • Several restaurants and pubs were visited and fines totalling R78 800 issued. Some restaurants received notices that they do not comply with the Business Act, Health Act and Fire Safety Act. Two restaurants were temporarily closed as they did not comply with by-law regulations and Health & Fire regulations
