The Coasts Halifax magazine recently listed 13 reasons why Dartmouth is great. Clothing stores, coffee shops, bicycle shops, small independent businesses that are less than six months old all made the list. Nowhere to be found was the Peace Pavilion, Alderney playground , Celtic Corner Pub with its quirky patio, the (CLASSIC AND REINVENTED) Micmac Tavern, Sullivans Pond, the ecological and historic gem that is Shubie Park, Dartmouth Crossing, canoe races on Lake Banook , the beautiful new Kings Wharf development, the Alderney Landing stage that hosted the Arcade Fire and many others for years when the Multicultural Fest was thriving there, The Vines restaurant, the downtown park dedicated to Joseph Howe, numerous lakeside beaches and neighbouring ocean beaches, a few beautiful libraries, beautiful old churches, unique round schools, and so many other things that make Dartmouth great for a great cross-section of the community. Its fine to celebrate people your own age who are being entrepreneurial and trying to make a name for themselves in a trendy community but Dartmouth has much more character than merely the products of the recent gentrification trend that has created new landmarks and businesses. To ignore the full story of Dartmouth is to try to reinvent it in ones own hip image and it ignores the fact that it has had many cool aspects for years that are worthy of celebration. If a newspaper or magazine wants to have massive appeal outside of a small clique it must strive to be more open-minded to socioeconomic and cultural diversity. Dartmouth has established reasons to visit that were nowhere to be found in this shallow list.
