The Common Man. He sits on a bench near Mahatma Gandhi statue on MG Road, his faded umbrella tilted over his left shoulder to shield himself from the morning sun. I first noticed him a month ago while waiting for the traffic signal to change, it was only earlier this week that I noticed the numbers displayed behind him represented a counter. Today, I went up to him to hear his story. His name is Sukumaran Menon K. He says he’s on a Samadhana Upavasa Satyagraha. He was a Central Government Employee for more than 40 years and invested all he had in a piece of land on Hosur Road and he lost it all. To the Government. This is his final fight for justice, the Gandhian Way - a peaceful fast that has been on for the last 723 days. God willing, if he is alive tomorrow, he will arrive at the bench at 8AM tomorrow and fast until 6PM, after which he will fold his umbrella and catch the bus home to his family. If you’re passing by Cubbon Park, stop and lend him a ear, nothing more.
