The Compulsory Education bureau is located at the corner of Evertzweg across from the Wilhemina park. It is directly in adjacent to the department of Gender affairs and Youth affairs. Located just below you will also find the Directorate of Public affairs (personnel affairs). The staff at the Compulsory Education bureau consists of the following persons: Ms. Sherlene Berkel, Compulsory Education officer (currently on leave) Ms. Verceley Courtar, Adjunct Compulsory Education officer Ms. Lillian Berkel, Administrative Assistant. The office hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. closed at 3 p.m to the public. However, appointments can be made up until 5 p.m. upon request. The main responsibilities of the Compulsory Education officer are: -Supervising the compliance with the Compulsory Education Law BES -Preventative monitoring and advising -Refer (students) for care -Nurture and promote cooperation with all stakeholders involved with the students -Enforce and sanction (the Compulsory Education Law BES) Tasks include the following activities: -Taking part in collaborations with other educational stakeholders and institutions -Advising schools concerning request for leave -Assess and issue decisions concerning exemption -Hold discussions with youth parents and other stakeholders involved -Carry out home visits -Engage youth services -Issue formal warnings -Making up of a HALT referral (HALT is an alternative measure when students come in violation of the ----Compulsory Education Law. Usually applicable for first time offenders) -Making up of an official report for the Public Prosecutor
