The Connecticut VEX IQ Robotics Competition was held Saturday, May 31, hosted by Mohawk Northeast of Plantsville, CT. Three elementary aged teams from Southington and Meriden Schools competed with their VEX IQ robots. The teams, were mentored by the high school FIRST Robotics Teams in their towns. Meridens FRC Team 228, Gus Robotics, mentored their team Gus Jr. Two teams from Southingtons Kelley Elementary School, the Cyber Shamrocks, were mentored by the Southington Cyber Knights. The Southington program was led by a 4th grade Kelley Elementary teacher, Valerie Moriarty. Both the Southington and Meriden High School robotics teams understand the importance of mentoring the youth, just as they themselves are mentored by engineering and business professionals in their robotics endeavors. Mentors and parents alike, looked on as the robots took the field. This was the first time competing for both teams and it was thrilling to see their hard work pay off as their robots performed the game tasks beautifully. The Cyber Shamrocks of Kelley Elementary School won the event with their robot Claw-bot as well as taking home the Sportsmanship and Judges Awards. Gus Jr. from Meriden won the Excellence award for their detailed written documentation of their robot design as well as winning the Energy Award. VEX IQ is a robotics program designed to transform STEM learning for young students and their teachers. Students snap robots together using an intuitive, toolless platform learning valuable lessons and skills that are needed in todays changing world.
