The Conservatives here continue to play games with our veterans. There was the news late last week that they had failed to spend $1.1 billion dollars they had committed to spending for vet services. They knew that was to be in todays Auditor General Report so they this weekend announced a new $2 billion in mental health services. This is a shell game, politics played on the backs of our vets. Dont spend money committed for them. Grab it back to help fight their deficit. Announce new money. Now lets see how much of this $2 billion is not spent. The AG Report highlighted the overly complex process and longstanding barriers that have led to a 24% refusal rate for veterans applying for disability benefits. That means that 3,684 who applied for needed benefits were refused on first application. Despite a commitment in 2009 to mental health strategy, Veterans Affairs does not collect information or report on the effectiveness of it. We need a new government in Ottawa. New Democrats have called on the Conservatives to expand health services for all veterans and their families, re-open Veterans Affairs Offices and end pension clawbacks.
