The Constitutional Holy Cow- freedom of Speech comes with a - TopicsExpress

The Constitutional Holy Cow- freedom of Speech comes with a rider,i.e., speech with responsibility which shall not violate other citizens legitimate constitutional rights, least the reputation and the right to dignity. It does not exist as solitary right in an absolute sense; instead it has contextual existence vis a vis other fundamental rights and others fundamental rights. What we do however is that very conveniently we believe we as Individuals as the absolute holders of the right to free speech, invariably without owning the appended accountability and completely intolerant towards fellow citizens right to free speech. Be it a college or the nation, the plural co-existence of people from diverse socio-cultural roots ( Caste, Region, Gender, Faith etc), the right to free speech can at best be co-relative if we believe in our existence as a society. If we believe in unfettered and absolute existence of us as Individuals alone, well this is what a majority of us are doing all the time. And it boils down from the national media to some of my colleagues in my college who are obsessed with and compete with national media in their bid to breaking news. Alas, the half baked, twisted and often misreported ones!!!!!
