The Country Liberals Government is focused on creating a confident culture in the Territory through strengthening behaviour management practices in our schools. Creating a Student Behaviour Management Taskforce is an election promise from the Country Liberals. “Respected professionals in the field of education will form the taskforce, which will provide advice to the Department of Education on how to best deal with anti-social behaviour in schools. Minister for Education, Peter Chandler, said members of the taskforce include four school principals, the NT Council of Government Schools, the Department of Education and Children’s Services, the Association of School Education Leaders, the Australian Education Union NT, and clinical psychologist Mr Andrew Fuller. “These organisations provide a broad representation across the education sector, while the four principals will bring specialist knowledge from urban, remote, primary and secondary as well as Top End and Centralian schools,” Mr Chandler said. “It’s also fantastic to have Andrew Fuller provide the Territory with his wealth of knowledge in the wellbeing of young people and their families. Mr Fuller has established programs for the promotion of mental health in schools, substance abuse prevention, and the reduction of violence and bullying. “The taskforce will meet once each school term, and will assess current processes for handling inappropriate behaviour, including critical incident response, suspension actions and extreme behaviour support. “We expect to see an increase in positive behaviour in schools to ensure students and teachers feel safe and supported. This will be judged by data collected by schools, including the number of suspensions. “Taskforce members will have the opportunity to work and consult with other government and non-government agencies, including NT Health, police, and the Office of Children and Families, which reflects the whole-of-government approach needed to address the area of anti-social behaviour.”
