The Cumberland County Soil and Water Conservation District has awarded the 2013 Resource Conservation Workshop Scholarship to J.D. Mason, a rising senior at Cape Fear High School. The Soil and Water Conservation District awards the scholarship to a high school student in the county annually. Mason is the son of Jeffrey and Sandy Mason of Dunn. The scholarship will allow Mason to attend a week-long environmental Resource Conservation Workshop on the North Carolina State University campus later this month. The program includes hands-on participation in a wide range of conservation topics and exposes high school students to career opportunities in natural resources management. During the week, students will tour a water treatment plant, visit an educational forest, see some of the university’s conservation projects and meet representatives from natural resource management agencies. Students take an exam at the end of the week to test what they have learned and to compete for college scholarships. Proceeds from the Soil and Water Conservation District’s annual tree seedling sale help fund the summer workshop scholarship. The mission of the Cumberland Soil and Water Conservation District is to take available technical, financial, and educational resources and administer programs designed to encourage individual responsibility to conserve, improve, and sustain our soil and water resources for future generations. For more information, call (910) 484-8479 or visit the district’s website at co.cumberland.nc.us/soil_water.
