The Daily: I am a fan of most types of cardio when done at the right time for the right reasons. Lets talk about some benefits of Sprints or HIIT cardio. 1. Preserves and strengthens muscle 2. Increase in metabolic rate 3. Strengthens the cardiorespiratory system. 4. Doesnt take all that long Number 3 is important. To actually burn fat, you need oxygen. O2. Strengthening the cardiorespiratory components allows for a better utilization of O2 as a fuel source. Its mechanics, like building and engine. The bigger engine you have, the more fuel it can burn. Healthy heart and lungs = a good engine = increased O2 utilization = better chance of fat being burned during less intense bouts of exercise. This doesnt mean always do HIIT or Sprints, and it doesnt mean only do low intensity. It means what it means. This is why strategy, individual periodization, and desired adaptation all play a part of designing a clients cardio program. Coach Fox
