The Darwin Centre, a shopping mall in Shrewsbury, U.K., welcomed four new GBP300,000 (US$485,00) escalators as part of a refurbishment. Made in Turkey, the escalators feature energy-saving sensors that slow them from their 1-mph-plus speed when no one is riding. They also boast transparent sides that reveal the machines’ inner workings. “We are delighted that the new escalators are in and working smoothly and linking the different levels of the Darwin Centre and the town center and its shops for people using the bus station,” mall Manager Kevin Lockwood said.
