The Dead Cartoonist: work in progress Our story so far: Struggling cartoonist Nate Thurringer is frustrated with his inability to get his comic strip distributed to and read by a wide audience, like uber-successful Milt Morey. He does not realize that even wealthy and powerful artists like Morey have problems—sometimes deadly ones. Then Nates life suddenly changes, and he finds himself suddenly involved in the affairs of Milt and his family: his ex-wife, daughter, and his current lover, the beautiful but troubled Crina. Nate travels to Europe, where Milt now lives, and ends up on a chase from the French Riviera to the Sun Coast of Spain and eventually Madrid, helping Crina rescue Milt from kidnappers. Along the way the two find solace in each other, but soon they and other characters will run into a dead-end street of lies and betrayal. Today: I love you almost enough to pay your ransom “I don’t know how it works,” said Nate. “You do have to know the number you’re looking for.” “But it can find any phone.” Maya took over the keyboard. “For example, this is Laredo’s number.” Another map came up. Crina stared at the screen. “But it’s the same map. The same place!” Nate looked at the screen. “Shoot,” said Maya. “This is the same map. How did I do that?” She began to backtrack through screens. Nate didn’t care about the mistake. He knew how the system worked. He had used it to track down his own direction-clueless father at Fisherman’s Wharf when the old man came to visit a few months ago. And he had used it on Janelle. Not in a stalking way. Just idle curiosity on a bored evening. Maya shook her head. “I don’t know.” “They may have destroyed the phone. They said it can’t be traced.” Nate recalled a plot line from a TV show—The Wire, maybe?—about criminals buying lots of cheap cell phones off the rack. “But when they call again we will be ready.” Maya was regaining some resolve. Nate had another thought. “You get internet here? How? I can’t get it anywhere but the Galaxy—the internet place in town.” “Oh, he gets it from the satellite. The TV.” We don’t have it at our house, either, everything comes from the cell phone, and we usually run out of minutes half way through the month.” Crina left, and made some noises in the kitchen. The room was stuffy, and Maya opened a window. A breeze came in immediately and began rattling the half-open blind. Nate stared at it. He thought he knew what he wanted to do. But the first decision was not his. Crina returned with a tray with double-shot-sized cups of coffee. She set the tray on the coffee table in front of the couch. Distracted, Nate wondered if it was called a coffee table in Spanish. Also, why was it called a coffee table at all? Maya, still standing by the window, did not wait for her coffee. “He will escape. I don’t know how. But there has to be a way to get him away.” Nate was astounded. “Do you want to risk his life for money? I mean two hundred and fifty thousand is a lot, but he has to have millions, doesn’t he?” find Lily Torrence on iTunes 46 people reached
